My son's stutter was exactly the same, back and forth, sometimes gone fully for a few months at a time. He's now 15 and had mild disfluency most of the time, but goes through periods (a few weeks at a time) where it gets more intense. My son doesn't care about his stutter and doesn't care to make the effort to "use his tools" but he was in speech therapy for years.
