In my LIMITED understanding, you have to be able to hear yourself to stutter. If you have ever tried a Delayed Auditory Feedback device, it's kind of amazing. The therapist dialed it in, and I went from a severe stutter to perfect fluency. The DAF was never part of my speech therapy, other than "here's proof that you can be fluent." Pretty much the same idea as the scene from The King's Speech.
