Felt empowered at work today Hi! This is my first post to this sub (i think), and I had a great day at work today!! Most people think that stutterers are not intelligent as most of you would know and my supervisor is one of those people. I work at a spice factory. I repackage spices in various containers and make blends. I speak regularly in front of my coworkers and my mind dumps all the information at once and by the time I can get certain words out the thing I was trying to say doesn’t come out the way I wanted to or doesn’t make sense at all. Some people have a hard time understanding me because of this. Anyway, we were working on repackaging on a machine called the AMS and we were having a problem with the the augur not dispensing the product properly because the spin plate (a indented, circular piece of metal that keeps the product from falling out on its own) would clog it up. My supervisor couldn’t figure out a solution so we just kept it off resulting in the product dumping out on its own after it’s been dispensed. It was very annoying because there was product everywhere. I was starting to get very annoyed with this so without a word, I disconnected the machine, went into the back of the warehouse, grabbed a nut similar to the one that holds the spin plate in place, and began to disassemble the machine. My supervisor yelled, “No! That won’t work!”. I continued regardless. All I did was space out the spin plate so product can flow freely without jamming up. It was so simple really. After both nuts were in place, I reassembled it, turned the machine on and let it rip. Worked beautifully. I didn’t say anything after that because what good would it do rubbing it in his face that I was right all along. I wanted him to feel stupid for doubting me and the look on his face said it all. We’re all cursed with the inability to properly communicate but that doesn’t mean we’re stupid. Don’t let people bring you down because of your disability. Prove them wrong, show them your worth, and be the best at everything you do. Thanks for reading. If anybody else has some stories to share I would love to read them.
