Maybe the guy was smiling and thinking, "hey, good on this lad for sticking it out and not being afraid to stutter and order." That is just as plausible as whatever we come up with in our head. If you ask me though, he was smiling to be polite and he didn't care much either way since you ordered fast or slow doesn't change his day.
