You got a point. Personally, I think the fear I have for stuttering and potentially being ridiculed forces me to try to come up with different pathways to fluency. I start searching for synonyms, restructure sentences in my head, and becomes quite good at finiding sentences I can speak fluently. However, it completely drains me because it requires a lot of brain power. Around friends and family, I don't care that I stutter, so I relax more, and as a result I block on almost every word. So, in a sense, I can be semi-fluent if I want to, but it's a lot of mental work... on the other hand, blocking on every word is a lot of physical work..
