Nah, it's fine. I do that whenever my actual name (my name is William too and it's impossible to say) isn't necessary. It's not really a lie, because it's just a placeholder if they don't actually need the information. Just like saying "Fine" when you're asked "How are you" isn't a lie if you're not actually fine, because that response is just a social convention.
