I have a funny story about that. When I was in gymnasium (probably about age 16-18), my classmates started throwing parties more and more often. Everyone was getting drunk quite quickly (I'm from Switzerland, so the drinking age is 16 for beer and 18 for stronger stuff) and I soon figured out that being to only sober one isn't that fun. I never liked the taste of alcohol and still find it absolutely repulsive but I framed it as an experiment to see how my stutter would react because I'd heard of stories where alcohol had a positive effect on it. So, I tried it out and took a couple shots and voilà – my stutter was virtually gone. My classmates, me included, were all quite baffled at how great that worked. The following couple parties I repeated the "experiment" with the same result. Then, one party, I thought to myself "Hey, since I hate the taste of alcohol so much, what if I make use of the placebo effect and just trick myself into thinking I'm drinking alcohol?". And this I did. Everytime people would take shots, I'd take shots of water. It had absolutely the same effect as when I was drinking actual alcohol. I never drank alcohol again. The mind is a powerful thing!
