Has anyone else gotten used to people thinking that they're stupid? I think most other stutterers out there can relate to this. But the fact is that the majority of people I meet think I'm stupid because of my stuttering and because of avoiding words. Stutterers have words they know they'll stutter on, and so they substitute a different word or avoid them altogether. As a result, it gives off the false impression that I have a very limited vocabulary and gives them the impression that I'm simple minded. So, they see me talking in these short, choppy sentences with a very small usage of vocabulary and awkward pauses and they get the impression that I'm of very low intelligence. That's been happening to me for so long now that I've come to expect it.
