Stuttering feels so bad because we try to avoid stuttering at all cost, but as we’ve experienced, the more your try to resist stuttering, the worse it gets. This is a vicious cycle that you want to come out of. So the idea behind disclosing and voluntary stuttering is to take that control back. You are dictating how, when and where you’ll stutter, instead of it happening randomly. So if stuttering was some kind of beast, You’re basically looking right into it’s eyes instead of running away from it. Is it difficult to stutter voluntarily? Yes, initially it is. But once you willingly start stuttering, you begin to lose the fear of stuttering. It is SUPPOSED to be scary when you first begin. The idea is to train your sub conscious to slowly reduce the fear of speaking. Once you lose the fear of stuttering, you’ll start speaking more, getting more practice and gradually get more and more comfortable speaking in general. This is what a virtuous cycle looks like that you should strive for.
