I’m in my late 50, female and began stuttering at around 5yo. I’ve heard a lot of men mention they’ve never met a female who stutters. That’s because the ratio is about 5:1. 5 out of 100 people who stutter are men and only 1 of 100 are female. So we’re basically unicorns. What helped me most was meeting other women who stutter and discussing the things we worry about: dating, pregnancy and fear we’ll pass it to our child, having to work harder to prove we’re capable with a stutter. And perhaps the biggest - that we’ve failed at being a woman and a deep sense of shame. Meeting other women who stutter has been a game changer, especially diversity. There is a women’s only support group every third Thursday of each month. We’ve had ages 19-80, different race and cultures. Women think and feel about stuttering differently than men. Please consider this group. The discussions are relevant to everyone and we all help each other explore our feelings. The next group is Thursday June 16., 8pm. Please join us. www.westutter.org.
