I grew up in the 80's and went to a speech therapist for my stutter. I only remember a little bit about it, and I don't think it helped too much, and my parents eventually stopped taking me. I don't recall ever being treated poorly because of my stutter. I was far harder on myself about it than others were. I certainly came off as shy because I just avoided speaking in most situations. In my adult life, I've never been harassed about it, though I think it's likely held me back some as I'm in a job where being comfortable speaking publicly is helpful.
