It is not only pathetic it is criminal how they hide effective treatments for stuttering. The usual prescription for someone who stutters is standardized speech therapy. This is usually useless and very often harmful. If someone does not see well or hear well, they do not think of seeing therapy or hearing therapy. That person just gets a prosthesis (eyeglasses/hearing aids) and they are usually much better. Same for stuttering!! If a person does not speak well (stutters) all they usually need is a prosthesis like the Edinburgh Masker (EM) or a device for Delayed Auditory Feedback (DAF). According to a 40 year old article in the British Journal of Communications Disorders the Edinburgh Masker helps approximately 40 percent of people who stutter. DAF also helps many people. Programs that change your voice and breathing help countless others. Unfortunately the speech establishment keeps pushing useless and harmful speech therapy. The other options are more difficult to find, but they are there and will probably be of great help to those of us who stutter.
