Thank you both for the great posts! I generally agree, but with the nuance that "support" should not be feeding someone's addiction to being a victim or helping them maintain stuttering as an excuse. I had a teacher who some might say "supported" me by not making me do presentations in front of the class. That only hurt me. Beyond stuttering, I believe the do-gooder approach leads to unintended effects more often than not. I agree it's all a process and there's no way to tell someone to overcome something. But I do believe we shouldn't feed their woe is me train. I had too many people doing that to me. Coddling people hurts them.
