Yea I’ve noticed exactly what you mentioned OP. Even the word “stutter”, isn’t designated to mean a speech impairment or speech disorder. Which kinda doesn’t leave space for pws in society. Language drives thoughts and behaviors in people. And people aren’t going to think about or be aware of stuttering as a speech disorder if the very word “stutter “ holds a different meaning for them. Neither will they have any empathy because they lack understanding of the condition. People use it to describe or mean so many different things, like a video buffering, something that happens when a person lying or nervous or lacks confidence or who’s frightened. I wonder if the misconceptions of stuttering will ever change given how small the pws community is in regards to the rest of non pws.
