How helpful is speech therapy? Hello everyone! I have been wondering about this for too long now. I am 22 years old, and my stutter is becoming severe these days. I get silent blocks where I cannot utter words, and I tend to use "filler words" (like, so, so like) to get around my blocks. My stutter is definitely worsened by my severe anxiety caused by my stuttering and by my day to day stress. I have been taking numerous measures recently to improve my speech such as running for a club officer and being open about my stutter. I recently joined toastmasters as well, but I will not be giving my first speech until next week. These are things that can enable me to cope with the psychological aspect of my stutter, but I have yet to learn how to physically cope with my stutter besides learning some abdominal breathing. To be honest, I didn't feel encouraged to attend speech therapy until recently because I always hid my stutter and I heard reports of other people saying their speech got worse after speech therapy. As I mentioned earlier, I get silent blocks, where still to this day, I panic when it happens, and quiet frankly, I still don't know how to deal with my silent blocks. I have a feeling that speech therapy can help me because they can teach me what to do to say my words during my silent blocks. I'm so tired of using my "filler words" to help me get out of my silent blocks. To those of you who have done speech therapy, how helpful was speech therapy for you? Thank you in advance for any inputs!
