It just makes sense. It's not that you are focusing on your stutter. It's that you are trying not to stutter. That's where you put your focus. And whatever you resist persists, so if you are trying to resist the stutter, you are also resisting how you are feeling. The tension inside of you will grow, causing you to stutter more. Once you stop putting a label on stuttering as something that is bad, and see it as something that is neutral, you will be able to focus on your speech and your stutter won't get any more severe. There won't be anything to resist. It's also essential to understand WHY you are viewing your stutter as negative. That gives you power to let go of these beliefs. "People won't like me if I stutter" "People will think I'm weird if I stutter" "If I stutter at work I will lose respect, authority" Untrue. It all depends on HOW you stutter. But that's another topic. Post takeaway: Work on your relationship with your stutter. You must be able to look your stutter in the face without flinching. That's how you overcome it.
