You got this. The first thing is that you have to stop beating yourself up. We all have the unrealistic belief that stuttering is our fault. It is not. View it like using a crutch or being color-blind. You didn’t choose it and it’s not your fault. The second thing I learned from my daughter, who also stutters: just tell people you stutter. It takes the pressure off you and takes the mystery away for them. If you’re ordering at a restaurant, you can say, “One sec, I have a stutter.” Then the waiter thinks, oh, okay, I know what’s going on here. And you can relax. Third, remember that most adults try to be decent people. Some people are awful. But most people you meet are going to be kind and non-judgmental. You don’t have to go through life afraid of offending people. Most people want to be good. Remembering that can take some pressure off. Fourth, stutter boldly. Stutter on purpose. Stutter everywhere you can. Because you’re allowed to live your life. Glad you left the depressing job. You’re going to be great.
