I'll usually point to what I'm ordering and read off the menu, which happens to make it somewhat easier to say. It's as if I'm assuming the waiters don't have the menus memorized so it doesn't feel unnatural. You can also ask for a recommendation or ask for details about a particular dish just to change up the tempo of the conversation. In my opinion, do whatever gets you the order you want. Personally I find ordering at restaurants difficult, even when I'm otherwise fluent and even compared to giving presentations.
