I’m 19 and I’ve been working in fast food for almost 3 years now. My coworkers are super kind and understanding. And most of the customers are too. But you will meet some shitty people. That’s just the way it is for people like us. I used to have a manager who would laugh at my stuttering, interrupt me as soon as it began, and even told a new employee that she would have no trouble answering the phone because “Sahar (me) can do it, and she can’t even talk.” I wish I would’ve went to corporate, but I was only 16 at the time and I was afraid of retaliation, and I wasn’t even sure how to get ahold of her boss. But she transferred to a different store, and I haven’t had those issues since. My only issue right now is with using the phone to take orders and stuff (at my job the phones are always ringing, and that’s where my stutter comes out the most). But for the most part, I’m exempt from using the phone unless there isn’t anybody else to cover it. I want to get better at it, but right now it’s just not working. I’ve worked other jobs (concurrently) and for the most part everyone has been super supportive. You just have to do the best you can. And communicate with your supervisors. That’s the only way they will know how to help you. Also, don’t hesitate to report anybody who mistreats you. You deserve the same respect as any one of those fuckers! Most of them won’t put in half the effort that you will, so why are you the one who’s worried? Good luck. You can do this!
