Your friend sounds like a dick, I don't know enough about him to really say much but it sounds like he isn't your friend or he just lacks empathy haha I'm also at Uni as well, honestly at first just try and make friends with as many people as you can while you still have the chance. It's acceptable for the first month to just go up to someone and introduce yourself without it being weird, so make good friends (male and female) which I would hope gives you a bit of confidence and assurance to then start to try and date. There's so much time at Uni to find someone, but it takes time and you need to be ready for it.
