Voluntary stuttering will help you desensitize a stuttering moment like the one you had. For me it prevents me from having those "downward spirals" where I lose control of everything and I am held prisoner by the block - physically and mentally. I have also been practicing meditation daily which i feel helps me decouple my stuttering from my thoughts during blocks. I feel very in control of the situation and I maintain focus on the conversation. In turn, those massive blocks turn into smaller ones.
