After I had trouble in elementary and middle school, I became quite stubborn in high school. When we had to read in front of class, I simply didn’t do it. I said “I pass, I’m not reading today.” I didn’t do presentations in front of class. Even when the teachers would threaten, I still didn’t do it. Some teachers understood and allowed me to present one on one to them. Some teachers persisted and I just made bad grades in their class. HS is hard enough, there’s no reason to torture yourself any more. And it IS torture to force a speech disabled kid to do things they can’t. Not just at the time of speaking, but the sleepless nights, worsening symptoms, emotional destruction, and the PTSD for the remainder of their life. Take baby steps speaking in front of others. At your own pace.
