Not all stuttering is genetic and 3rd grade is still well within the range of typical developmental onset. The trauma hypothesis of stuttering (I forgot the scientific name for the theory) does not have good evidence behind is and is discredited by most SLPs. The stuttering experience can create trauma depending on the person/experience/etc. but trauma is not responsible for it.
