What can/should I do to help my 3+ year-old grandson?

What can/should I do to help my 3+ year-old grandson? One of my grandchildren, age 3 years, 2 months, was having a very difficult time when the family gathered for a noisy and active dinner recently. It was the most pronounced event when I have watched him struggling to speak. What can I do to make this child comfortable and to be a help. I certainly do not want my actions (or lack thereof) to be a hinderance. I have not yet had a conversation with the child's parents, and they are intelligent and lovely people and no doubt aware of what I observed, but we just have never discussed it. The child is intelligent and in a high quality pre-school. Is it none of my business? I have no intention of being judgmental and I am seeking advice from those who have lived this experience. I love the kid so much I just want to do what I can and to not do what I shouldn't. Thanks.
