medical research only? not sure. Hard to determine. What is your definition of "medical." If you expand it to stuttering, generally, then we're talking somewhere between 10-20 million dollars a year. At any given them there are a handful of major NIH research grants out that pay between 1-3 million dollars over a course of 3-5 years. I can think of three right now and that's just off the top of my head. Then we have foundation grants and university internal grants. There are more of these and likely constitute the greatest contribution of financial support of research. So, tl/dr; an amount that sounds like a lot, but in reality it's not that much.
