How do I kick down what remains of my stutter? So: key background info. I'm a first gen, who is perfectly bilingual in both languages - home and English. Home language is considered substantially different from English. I was around 8 or 9 when I developed a stutter. It wasn't too surprising, because it happens to a lot of people at that age. I stuttered in both languages. However, my very conservative parent and ex-stutterer took this very badly and worked hard to get me to stop. This included some extreme, extreme measures. I won't detail what. Two important notes: I stuttered only when speaking extemporaneously; when reading from a page, my stutter disappeared (is this normal???). I also didnt stutter in variation with stress. The first bulk of progress happened due to extreme pressure from said parent, between the ages of 10 and 12. Residual stuttering remained, but I dealt with it by using lots of irrelevant, annoying filler words and my ability to cut them out developed with time. I began speaking a much slower with time, but I don't see it. As far as I can tell, I always spoke slowly. Along with that, the stuttering in my other language also resolved. I stutter a lot in the languages I learned in school, but I'm told this is typical. However, lately, I noticed it's been coming back... but only in language #2. However, same problem - only extemporaneously. If the words are written on paper, it is fine. And this is extremely humiliating for me. It was GONE, as in, GONE-GONE for nearly a decade. And I have no idea what to do. I guess my questions are: is it normal to stutter in only one language? Is it normal for stutters to return out of nowhere? And what do I do about it?
