I am lucky enough to be able (after years of trying) to work with a therapist who specializes in ART. And I do agree with you, most of the time you cant just suddenly resolve to not care about how your stuttering makes you feel and ignore it. But ART isn't about ignoring or suppressing, it's actually the opposite. You work on opening up and embracing all sides of you, as suppressing our feelings towards stuttering is what makes us struggle so much when stuttering, when we technically dont have to make stuttering so painful. I'd recommend listening to these episodes with Vivian Sisskin. She's the foremost avoidance reduction therapy clinician and talks about it and the overall philosophy. And please feel free (anyone) to ask me any questions if you are curious or decide to try this on your own. Seriously. I initially tried it on my own and burned myself out because while the concepts make connect for you, there is also a science to making the therapy successful. Don't hesitate to ask if you have any questions. http://stuttertalk.com/tag/vivian-sisskin/
