I know that people don't mean anything by it, but it still upsets me. "Did I stutter?" == "Was I lacking confidence or conviction?" Using that phrase just reinforces a false, yet culturally-recognized correlation between stuttering and lack of confidence/conviction. Again, I know that people mean nothing by it but I am still bothered by the wider consequences of perpetuating false and demeaning notions about stuttering.
