I suggest that you consider advertising up front that you stutter. When you talk about it openly, you eliminate the power you’ve assigned to stuttering. I used to allow stuttering to take up so much head space, that the mental anxiety became more of an issue than just stuttering. When you choose to disclose, people may surprise you by considering that as a show of confidence. If you’re confident, they’ll see it’s no big deal to you and will follow your cue. Also, people tend to really respect someone confident enough to expose vulnerabilities. I think many people secretly wish they could be as vulnerable as we are by default. Being open and authentic leads to stronger relationships, and people may feel safe enough to share something personal about themselves. Authenticity begets authenticity.
