The Joy of Becoming our True Selves (podcast episode) Stutter with Confidence #73 with John Ahlbach The True Joy Lies in Becoming our Genuine Selves John is a retired teacher and he was also the Executive Director of the National Stuttering Association (then known as the National Stuttering Project) for 15 years and played an integral part in helping to significantly grow and lay the foundation for that organization. We discussed how the pandemic has created an explosion of new online stuttering support opportunities; John’s feeling that stuttering was like a ghost that was haunting his life in childhood; the time where he came out of the closet in a 20 minute speech during college that was “the most freeing experience“ of his life; some of his experiences and challenges while running the NSA/NSP in the 1980s and 90s; his perspective that having stuttering support meetings only once per month is not nearly as effective as more frequent meetings in terms of the power to help people who stutter; the fact that many of us who stutter latch on to negative reactions from our past and projective onto current and future moments; and a ton more. Happy listening. https://youtu.be/ESXZlxLCW10
