Speech therapist / SLP in-training here. Anyone willing to chat? Hi /r/stutter, I'm not a (p)erson (w)ho (s)tutters, but I am someone who is interested in finding out more about ways to help people who do. Mods - I hope this is an acceptable use of the subreddit, and I apologize in advance if it isn't. I'm a 30 year old guy, a speech therapist (SLP) in-training at a Canadian university, and currently ploughing my way through a fluency textbook (if you're interested, it's called 'Stuttering' by Barry Guitar). Bottom line is, the textbook is fine, but the case studies seem staged and stereotypical, and I'd like to chat with a real person who is living with a stutter. Reading through the posts has given me a lot of insight, but I still have questions. I'm a real person, as you can see if you click on my post history, and not a researcher, just a future clinician trying to get a better picture of how stuttering affects people's lives. We're all pretty anonymous here, but I might ask you your age, some details about your family, the approx. onset of your stutter, etc., so if you'd rather chat through Reddit private message, I'm definitely down with that. In terms of confidentiality, I'm not an SLP yet, but I would NEVER disclose anything you tell me in confidence -- heck I won't even know your real name, but I wouldn't even disclose your reddit username. Please PM me, or just reply to the topic if you're game. Thanks! EDIT: I just want to say thanks to the half dozen people who PM'ed and shared their stories with me, and to the SLPs who chimed in with advice. If I haven't written a detailed response, it's because I have been insanely busy with my studies, but I will get back in case anyone is interested in continuing a dialogue. The Reddit inbox is confusing too, and when I check my sent messages, some of my responses are not there, so I hope they went through. I'm learning that SLPs sometimes get bad rap from people who stutter for not knowing enough about fluency (or for treating everyone the same, regardless of individual struggles). I hope that listening to your stories will help me to be a better clinician. I will continue to monitor and reply to responses on this thread, so please don't hesitate to PM or post! Thanks again!
