I think that the child tries to speak as little as possible and when it speaks, then just when it's sure it can say something properly. The teachers just don't get to hear it stutter and assume that the child doesn't. I really know a lot of stories where this was the case. With me it was similar. Some teachers didn't know that I stutter, therefore if you would ask them if I stuttered they would say no.
