Hi, I'm in graduate school to officially become a speech therapist as well. I'm working with a 16 year old who has a moderate to severe stutter & struggles with self esteem. I'm trying to incorporate the mental health aspect. It's tough because counseling is somewhat part of our "scope of practice," but at the same time, we're not licensee mental health clinicians.. Nevertheless, I feel it's absolutely critical with stuttering & not all clients are able or willing to seek out psychiatrists or therapists. I don't have a stutter, but I've struggled with anxiety & perfectionism, so it helped me to learn some strategies to deal with that. I used a lot of deep breathing, yoga/ stretching, questioning negative thoughts/ attitudes (e.g. if I think "oh I'm so awkward," ask myself, "is this useful?")
