Most people mean no harm when they laugh, it’s just the most common way to react to an awkward situation. The awkwardness is due to the lack of education and publicity on stuttering. There was a guy at my work who has some major power issues. He needed to be the best at everything and would get into arguments and scream at the boss over stupid stuff. I remember he smirked the first couple times I stuttered around him but after we got to know each other, he stopped reacting to it. The best way to get over this is to just stop caring and start thinking “will they remember this in an hours time?” because chances are, they won’t. Think back to all the embarrassing things you’ve seen people do. You’ll probably struggle thinking of any because you simply don’t care that they did something embarrassing! I get people smirking and giggling at me from time to time but I see it as a way to break the ice. I stuttered and they heard it, so now they know I struggle with speaking
