**Do not do this.** This is called a physical secondary, any movement with stuttering tension (eye blinking, tapping hand etc). Physical secondaries may seem like they are helping your stutter, but in reality, these habits are only going to make it worse long term. 1. Most of the time the physical secondaries are a way of tapping a tempo because many think that this assists with getting out the words, but this also results in exponential tension when one does not get out the word on time. So in that way, it is going to cause more tension. It is also not a stepping stone to other techniques because it does not help release tension, but rather tries to squeeze out the words. 2. A physical secondary leads to a worse physical secondary. One may begin just tapping his finger against his side when he stutters, in a week it becomes his entire hand, and in a year it becomes his fist slamming into the side of his torso. That's how physical secondaries work, they are a bad habit that becomes worse with time. It will become harder to stop as time goes on. I worked with one of the leading experts on stuttering who told me that he was working with a guy who began clenching his mouth repeatedly when he stuttered, which developed into him digging his teeth into his bottom lip. Soon enough, he would bite so hard during his stutters that he would fully bleed every time he got a block. 3. It just looks bad. A lot of stutters's goals are just to look natural and normal in everyday life, and to be able to hold a conversation. So although this may help you in certain situations, in the real world, it is not a viable solution.
