Great question! Short answer is, no. Longer answer is, stutterers are told to “take a breath” by well meaning and *uninformed* people. Sadly, many of those are SLP’s who likely received nearly zero training in treating dysfluency. If you are a master at yogic breathing and meditation, your deep breath will calm you. If you are a regular person, your deep breath, during a moment of stutter-related panic, will further increase the panic. You don’t need “new air” to talk. Without taking breath, count to 5. See? In fact, an exhale will help release the block. It will work even better if you learn how to combine it with making eye contact. See my post here for the formal references to this issue.
