Yes, I definitely stutter more with my parents. This is a really common thing that worries people who stutter and their parents, so please read all of this: Most people stutter more when they are comfortable with certain people or in an environment. I stuttered from a young age and before I met a great speech therapist, my mom was really worried about why I stuttered more at home and didn’t stutter as much at school or outside. She worried that I was feeling more stressed out for some reason because of my mom (which was totally not the case). We brought this to the therapist we stayed with for many years, and she brought a lot of relief to my mom by telling her that I stuttered more around her because I was comfortable and didn’t feel the need to hide my stutter with her. As you can imagine, this was a great relief to my mom, and I hope it is for you too. I haven’t fully reached being comfortable with showing my stutter outside of my home yet, but I’m trying. I know it’s incredibly difficult and will take a lot of time, but just know that it’s ok to stutter. It really is. If you want to, you can try being more open with your stutter even with people who don’t know you as well. Just a disclaimer though, I’m not a professional. If you want to try this and if possible, I suggest finding a speech therapist that supports you and advises you along the way. I wish you luck and support in your journey!
