Does anyone else think they come off as “mean” or unapproachable because you don’t engage in small talk?

Does anyone else think they come off as “mean” or unapproachable because you don’t engage in small talk? At my internship I’m reluctant to small talk when people ask how I’m doing or even say stuff like “hi” or “bye”
