Well, I think the most important point is this: It’s not your fault! If you were blind, you wouldn’t feel ashamed of your disability. Same thing for deafness or paralysis or any other disability. People don’t blame themselves for those disabilities. But we do. We blame ourselves and feel shame—but it’s not our fault. What if, instead of shame, we were proud of everything we do despite stuttering? What if we decided that, if anyone has a problem with how we talk, that’s on them? I think it helps to fight that guilt and shame. We need to be on our own side. Getting rid of that psychological baggage can free us up a bit.
