In my experience it works if you do it consistently. I've done it on and off throughout my life and I made some progress. But I was never consistent due to mental/mood shifts and periodic anxiety increases. When ever I would stop for a little bit I would revert back to the way I was or worse even until I forced my self to repeat. It's like a vicious cycle. If you can stay consistent tho you'll probably get alot better permanently.
