Just realized this happens to me too. It's one of the worst!I don't know about you, but I've found it helps to pre-emptively tell people I'm going to be talking to a lot that I stutter and explain to them what they might expect from me (I do this long before they've seen me stutter, because I know eventually they will). A lot of people don't know much about it or have rarely encountered stutterers, so they're genuinely mistaken. Other times I'll have non-stuttering stuttering symptoms, like sounding suddenly louder as I try to blurt a sentence out, and sounding upset/agitated when I'm not at all. The listener being aware that I stutter helps a lot in these situations where communicational misunderstandings and micro-interactions can quickly get awkward, but are difficult to explain in the moment. I'm 32 and only started doing it this year, fyi. People have been surprisingly understanding about it.
