I used to disclose bc it took pressure off of me. Also, if I got stuck, I already told the person that I stutter so they are not surprised. Otherwise, you're leaving it up to the listener to figure out what's going on. Disclosing also makes the listener comfortable. Disclosing helped me to accept my stuttering and be ok with it. I stopped resisting it. Once I accepted it, it was then that my speech started improving. People also appreciate your being vulnerable. It's a brave thing to disclose and it really helped me. I don't disclose much anymore bc I'm comfortable with my stutter, but I will if I'm having a really hard time and I usually disclose with humor. It was a powerful tool in my transformation. I used to do anything to hide my stutter. Now I love challenging myself with public speaking. On the other side of that fear is so much joy and confidence. When public speaking I do disclose at the start.
