I don't know why you'd think people would expect you to have gotten over it. Almost no one who had a serious stutter from when they were very young actually "gets over it". People who say they stuttered and got over it mostly only had minor temporary stammers that weren't the same as being a lifelong stutterer. Can you get more confident and lose some of the anxiety-related stutter downward spiral? Yes. But for many of us, we'll never "not stutter". So, it's not a failure. And I honestly don't think people "expect" you not to stutter anymore. If anything, people tend to expect you not to change. Like when you see your cousin that was 7 years old 6 years ago, you're still kinda expecting him to be 7, not 13.
