Cornered at work I’ve been working as a bank teller for a little over 6 months now. As with most stutters being on a phone causes a lot of anxiety and when anxiety hits I freeze up and can’t get words out of my mouth at all. Today at work my manager comes up to me and says I need to start answering phones. The whole time I’ve been with the bank she knew I had a stutter, other people would answer phones and I would take the bulk of the manual labor like transactions and stuff because I find it a lot easier to make casual conversation in person than to answer a phone with a scripted greeting. I’d be lying if I said I didn’t want to answer phones because I do. I’ve tried multiple times to pick up the phone while I was at the bank and every time I freeze up and my brain won’t send the words to my mouth, nothing comes out no matter how hard I try. I really don’t know what to do I’ve gone to a speech pathologist to learn methods to get through situations like these but no matter what method I use the words won’t come out. I don’t know if anyone else has had an experience like this but any input would be appreciative.
