Does your SLP specialize in stuttering? What's their credentials? Don't hesitate to make them interview for the job, as it were. What's their success rate? If they have a patient they can't help, who do they send them to? Who is the premier SLP who specializes in stuttering in the area? What's kind of timeline is normal for their patients? Obviously, everyone is different, but ask them for a median or a range. "Are you the best available?" Now, having said all that, even with the best speech therapist, don't expect any immediate relief / improvement. For me, it was a process. A rebuilding of my speaking from the ground up. But if you find you plateau, but aren't seeing progress in the process, you need to ask the SLP "what's up?" Keep in mind that the process doesn't necessarily mean your speech in public gets gradually better. You might be doing a lot behind closed doors before you ever use it in public. But I'm not an SLP. I don't know all of the different approaches. Take my advice as just anecdotal and limited.
