Hey, I can empathize with this a lot. I’m a rising 4th year at a US med school and am planning on going into internal. Ive felt the same qualms and thoughts when talking to patients. It’s so awkward having your patient finish your sentence for you! I used to have a very cynical view on this and beat myself up after I’d come home a lot. I think at the end of the day we have to decide whether we believe if people are generally hostile or friendly towards us in a macroscopic abstract sense. There will be people who call you out but at the end of the day most of the negative thoughts we assume other people have about our stuttering are just in our head (projection, over-catastrophizing). I found during my IM rotation that if I just let out my stutter, with complete disregard, I had more control over actually everything. It would turn some eyes, especially during rounds, but atleast I was saying what I wanted to say and being a part of the team. I was debating taking a gap year as well but just tryna get it done now. Good luck on the journey, feel free to HMU if you ever want to talk medicine or life :^)
