My husband has a very severe stutter. We met when we were in our early 20s. He’d never dated before that. He’s pretty hot so I’m sure his stutter was an issue for some girls. He went through the whole thinking he’d be single forever thing. But really I think as you get older you are looking for someone who will be a good life partner and a good person to raise a family with, and you do start looking being less picky about superficial things. But that’s not the same as “making up for” stuttering. My husband is a wonderful man and will be a great father, and it’s not like that “makes up for” his stuttering. He’s those things and he stutters. You wouldn’t expect someone to make up for being deaf or in a wheelchair by being awesome at other things. You’d just accept that being deaf or needing to use a wheelchair was a neutral thing about them. There are women out there who will see stuttering as a neutral thing about you. We texted a lot, and still text a lot. We hike. We talk a lot, too, but we also do things where we don’t have to.
