I have a friend at my school who’s an engineering major. We both stutter and I met him in a philosophy course. He’s one of the only other people I know at my school who struggles with the same thing. Despite that, he was extremely social in class and asked questions all the time. It was really inspiring to see and reassuring that there are others who struggle with the same thing out there. He made me realize that no one else really cares as much as we think they do. I study philosophy and I just started TAing and teaching a small class. I’ve been terrified about it. Though, I’ve found that students don’t really care that I have it. Sure it takes me longer to share things with them, but they seem to understand what I’m saying just fine. I share these things with you to let you know that people are often far more compassionate than we assume they are, especially on college campuses :) In the job world they are usually the same way. Keep putting yourself out there. It’s unconformable, but if stuttering has one lesson to offer it’s the lesson of learning how to be comfortable being uncomfortable.
