Yes, I know exactly what you mean. We all grow up in a society that tells us stuttering is bad. A lot of people who stutter and SLPs work on changing these attitudes but we won't be able to change society in a day. That's why I think it is ok to teach and learn fluency techniques while at the same time strengthening the sense that stuttering is ok. My patients are able to deal with that cognitive dissonance very well. They often come to me hating their stutter and wanting to eradicate it and leave with a technique that helps them get their meaning across in a presentation or job interview but also stuttering more comfortably in their everyday lives. That's a good compromise I think.
