If I'm speaking to certain people, mainly store clerks (say I'm ordering food) and I get stuck, it often feels like I get a look of complete horror. Like they'll get caught completely off guard and not know how to process the situation. Are they making me nervous? Is there somerhing wrong with me? What's happening? Many people have little experience with speech impediments. I don't think we should judge people based on how they look at us in any given situation. A lot of people simply don't know how to act. Some people associate stuttering with different things because they don't know anything about it. Even us that do stutter arguably know little about it because research on it is scarce or inconclusive. It might be an idea to communicate with those people that give you looks if it bothers you. Even though it can be completely hard to open to people about your stammer, it can make it easier for both parties. A coworker once asked me if I stuttered because he made me nervous, and I just calmly explained him that I've stuttered since I could speak. Communication goes a long way, especially for us that are impaired in the communication department.
